***OOPS - Rian meant to say that Bone ran for 55 issues, not 66 (that's Preacher).
Okay, my list.
ReplyDelete5. "The Ultimates" volume 1. One of the best superhero books I've ever read.
4. "Invincible," the.. second trade, I think? Where we find out the truth about Omni Man.
3. "Strangers in Paradise." The whole thing because it's a complete story and there aren't really "arcs."
2. "Preacher." Same as #3.
1. "Bone." I think there are only 55 issues, rather than 66 like Rian said. But a fantastic book and probably the best book (graphic or otherwise) I've ever read.
The issue in which Omni-Man kills the Guardians of the Globe (#7) is in the second Invincible trade, but we don't find out the reasons for his actions via flashback sequences until the third trade (issue 11, if I'm not mistaken).
ReplyDeleteThere were indeed only 55 issues of Bone. I'm assuming that since I said 66, I was confusing it with Preacher, which was 66 issues.
That's a solid list, Scott. The fact that four of your five choices are essentially the same as mine, just in different order, probably says something about the quality of those titles. Or it says that we both read shitty comics, but they happen to be the same shitty comics.
Hey guys, here are my thoughts:
ReplyDelete• "Kick-Ass" - means different things to different people. And I don't know if someone talking about their injuries should be considered "stereotypical." Patience is a virtue, Jesse. Rian, I hate the things you say. You guys are both snobs. ALSO, Millar is pronounced 'Miller.' Please acknowledge that. And Mignola is pronounced "Min-yola." Stop acting like you're twelve.
• "Secret Invasion" - Leinil Yu needs to slow down and get his proportions down. The inking did look nice. People need to stop bitching about Spider-man's eyes. Rian needs to stop reading Bendis books if he hates them so much. All he's doing is showing Marvel that they need to give Bendis more projects. I haven't read anything BUT New Avengers, and I'm not lost. What's going on there, Jesse?
You guys are definitely afflicted with proconceived-notion-itis. Stop reading about the shit you're interested in before you read the actual comic. Self-control, people.
Why is HAWKEYE a Skrull? He's the House of M parallel universe Hawkeye. There was even a New Avengers issue where he hunted down and banged the Scarlet Witch. Why would a Skrull go on that spiritual, personal journey.
• Walking Dead was really good. Fuck that baby. It wasn't even Rick's. And Rian- cliffhangers are what make books sell. I felt it was a great cliffhanger. Who are you to argue over the color of red herrings?
• The Den Saga is awesome. I read most of it straight from my Dad's collection of Heavy Metal magazines from the 70's. (BTW, did ANYONE catch the "Major Boobage" South Park episode from 2 weeks ago?)
My LIST:
5. Hellboy Volumes 1-5 by Mike Mignola
4. Planetary by Warren Ellis & John Cassaday
***SIDENOTE*** This pick is neck and neck with Warren Ellis' Authority run, btw, because if Jenny Sparks was real? I would try my damnest to meet her and make her love me.
3. Preacher by Garth Ennis & Steve Dillon
2. Sandman by Neil Gaiman
1. Watchmen by Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons
Runners up were:
- Warren Ellis' Authority run (as mentioned before)
- We3 by Grant Morrison & Frank Quitely
- Ghost In The Shell by Masamune Shirow
- David Boring by Daniel Clowes
- Nextwave by Warren Ellis & Stuart Immonen
Good podcast, btw. JESSE- KICK-ASS soundtrack on this podcast.
Karl:
ReplyDelete- The Millar/Miller thing is one that I'm aware of, but for some reason have never adapted to for whatever reason. I think that subconsciously I still call him Mill-"arr!" because it's spelled different from my name and it doesn't register as Mill-"err?" Whatever the reason, I acknowledge that I've been pronouncing his name wrong. As for Mignola, I never knew whether I was pronouncing it right or wrong.
- I read the Bendis books that seem worth reading. House of M was pretty good. I want to read Secret Invasion because I like the art and I like the big crossovers Marvel has been doing once a year lately.
- I see an article online about something I'm interested in, I'm gonna read it. Can't help it. Curiosity killed the cat and this cat is pretty curious.
- As I plunk down my $2.99 to buy Walking Dead, I'm entitled to my opinion on it's contents. I like me a good cliffhanger as much as the next comic-reader, but I thought the one between issues 47 and 48 was pretty cheap. The same as a "cheap laugh" or a "cheap thrill", I thought it was a pretty cheap cliffhanger.
- I've still only seen the Britney Spears episode of the new block of South Parks. I need to catch up.
- As with Scott and Jesse, that's a solid list. I've never read David Boring or Ghost In The Shell, but I've read and/or own all of the rest of your picks. I considered Nextwave for my list, and probably should have considered WE3, but that somehow slipped my mind.
Right away, i wanted to apologize for my initial "rub the wrong way" approach to my previous comment. You guys aren't children, and i don't hate EVERYthing you say. Just most of it. hehe.
ReplyDeleteWhen you go on about Bendis, it just sounds like everybody I've heard going on about Bendis, and because you come from the same household as scott and yezek, who were both in my class 3rd year bitching about Bendis, I think I lumped you in with them. So i was in the mindset of, "Why the fuck is Rian reading anything by Bendis? Last time I checked he can't stand Bendis." So sorry for that. I definitely don't believe he's the cat's pajamas, and I'm never one to complain about his fluffy, mainstream comic book stoires. I know what I'm getting into with a Bendis story beforehand. Sometimes it's worth the money, sometimes it isn't.
Dude, I'm not trying to put a clamp down on your right to have an opinion with walking dead or anything else for that matter. I just felt you'd be better off not putting SO MUCH STOCK into such little things. And if you're in fact not putting SO MUCH STOCK, don't talk like you are. It was one cliffhanger of a comic book- an entertainment medium just like all the others- built on cliffhangers. If you didn't like it, that's cool. But whether you liked it or not, it was a good cliffhanger with a good payoff- a bullet ripping through a baby. That's fucking cool.
I wanted to include a grant morrison book on my top 5, but i haven't read anything of his that beats my current top five. I did forget to say that his run on New X-Men is definitely in my runner-ups.
AND... about south park. "Major Boobage" is an episode where the boys learn that they can get high off of male cat piss. Kenny trips balls throughout the episode on various occasions, and his trippy world is just like the Heavy Metal animated film. There are tits EVERYWHERE. I couldn't stop giggling throughout the entire episode. You should check it out as soon as possible.
I'd like to give one of Bendis' old crime GNs a try, but I can't bring myself to plop down that much cash on a book that the odds tell me I won't like.
ReplyDeleteJinx was pretty good. So was Fire.
ReplyDeletebut yeah, I'm not sure how much the asking price is, but considering it's black and white and it's bendis doing his own art, ehhhhh. If you can borrow it, maybe. I probably wouldn't encourage you to pay for it.
The only one I own is Fire.
