KARL'S NOTES:
ReplyDelete-Animal House, King Kong, or any other old(er) film that people rave about is usually because it was a milestone for filmmaking. It set a bar. It touched every film that came after it. It's a classic. It has redefined the genre. There often times are newer films that have set the bar even higher since then, so maybe Rian's film tastes have been refined on these newer films, but ultimately what needs to be acknowledged i that these films set the bar, and if you don't recognize and embrace that before you watch it, you will forever wonder what the big deal was. I'm glad you enjoyed Animal house, Rian.
-Storm Shadow is the most disappointing out of all the new disappointing costumes. And I take offense that you would compare his shitty costume to Tetsuya Nomura's character designs.
-Wanted is going to be a big gamble. I have basically completely removed it from my brain as any kind of faithful adaptation of the comic, and will be seeing it as just a film with maybe a similar theme to the comic. But I'm not holding my breath for that either.
I can't do a Top 5 for movies people should see so I made a Top 6, with a lot of nominees vying for the top spot.
Top 6 Movies Everyone Should See:

So my Top 6 list is:
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Pulp Fiction
Monty Python & the Holy Grail
Shawshank Redemption
Romeo + Juliet
Waking Life
And now that i can look at my Top 6 of films EVERYONE SHOULD SEE, I can say that my Top 5 would be the same minus Monty Python & the Holy Grail. The real world is pretty absurd already.
I have to say, that was hard. Because a lot of those movies were not my favorite picks, but universally, the better movie with a broader scope in message that People as a whole could understand, embrace or reject.
I can't believe Monty Python made it in. It beat out Blues Brothers & the Big Lebowski, which would have been SO HARD for me to choose between the two if it came down to it.
I also flip-flopped about 50 times with Malcolm X and Shawshank. I opted Shawshank because it covers a broader range of shit to overcome (even though both movies feature jail, oppression, rising against what is expected, etc).
nice list savage.
ReplyDeleteits hard coming up that list because there are so many movies to include. i thought it a fun lis to put together. thanks for adding your list.
The way you have 30 movies listed there with your choices then pulled from each category is how my list was originally comprised until Jesse made me get rid of all but five of my runners-up. A few titles notwithstanding, our lists look rather similar, Karl.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised to see Romeo + Juliet there, not because I don't like it, but because I didn't think most people liked it nearly as much as I do. What a great film.
And based on the fact that Pulp Fiction is on all three of our lists, it's looking like that's becoming the official film of Sidetracked.
Oh, and just to whet your appetites, based on the recommendations of Savage and Munoz, I will be discussing Blue Velvet and The Jerk on the next episode.
Well, I was just trying to think of a list that would have a good blend of all sorts of universal themes.
ReplyDeleteRomeo + Juliet is Shakespeare, word for word. And it's got all that romance and the tragic ending that could be avoided if people had put aside their differences early on before irreversible events happened. I figured above all other films about love and the hardships of hate, it would be this film.
And of course Fight Club fit into every category as my personal nod to one of MY all-time FAVORITE movies, but I couldn't in good conscience put it in my top 5 because I feel it's too soon to consider it required viewing for EVERYONE (purely on thematics, the twist alone almost nudges it in). We'll see how society develops in the next ten years and if american men become even more emasculated, then it will become required viewing imo.
But I found that the movies I was pickeing or considering usually contribute a whole lot more to the psyche than just escapism. I really enjoy movies that make me rethink my opinions on values and such to see them in a new light; a new perspective. o this agenda kind of fueled my pics.
This episode needed more jokes! When Jesse mentioned the Iron Man slurpee I was just waiting for someone to chime in with 'did it taste like metal!? or have vodka in it!?'.--This happened like twelve times this episode, try to have more jokes!!! Storm Shadow's costume is definitely the worst, he looks like a gay jedi knight. Rian, I wanna see Sarah Marshall, but now it's too late cuz Iron Man's comin' out. Also, I'm really excited for Hancock, I think it's gonna be awesome. Lucky Louie was the Louis C.K. show--man I've gotta get that dvd, still can't believe he wrote Pootie Tang. Good movie lists, and props to Rian and Karl for considering The Way of The Gun. That would definitely be on my list, but my list would be too self indulgent and not cover every genre. Like this:
ReplyDeleteAliens
The Way of The Gun
Fight Club
Pulp Fiction
Children of Men
Jesse, props for throwing in Wu-Tang-Y'all Been Warned, Iron Flag is the most underrated Wu album ever, possibly my favorite Wu -Tang album.
Oh, and I didn't hear a buzzing sound at the end of the episode, does that mean there's something wrong with me!?
What am I, Jerry Seinfeld? This is a podcast, not Comedy Central. You should record some jokes and send them to me and I can put them throughout the episodes to fill your comedy quota.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I just noticed that you changed Kill Bill to Pulp Fiction. Wanted to fit in with the crowd, eh?
ReplyDeleteI meant Kill Bill, you fucker!! I'm just gonna record my own commentary over your podcast and upload that for the fans who want more jokes!!!
ReplyDeleteThese comments need more pointless arguing. Your comments section has definitely jumped the shark. Please bring back more pointless arguing.
ReplyDeleteI hate you all.
I'm with Scott on this one. I mean against him, screw Scott. See I've started already.
ReplyDeleteIf you want pointless arguing, something tells me that all you'll have to do is wait for the next episode.
ReplyDeleteRian, if you haven't seen it yet, here's the ending of Iron Man that you missed with Sam Jackson:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjBiVZ2uoeA
I didn't miss shit.
ReplyDeleteTop five Movies People should see. This is a tough call, I started with a list of some of my all time favorite movies taking out the die hards and back to the futures. Then I tried to cut it down. The first list kind of looked like this
ReplyDeleteThe way of the gun
pulp fiction
rocky
tombstone
unforgiven
pool hall Junkies
Ronin
The Good, The Bad and the ugly
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
leon
No country for old men
children of men
5.The good the bad and the ugly- I wrote number five with each of the three westerns on the list in this spot. with val kilmer as doc holiday in tombstone and clint in unforgiven you cant go wrong, both are great films. In the end I went with G,B&U because sergio leone brought the western to another level, the sets are insane, the action is intense and ennio morricone's scores it perfectly.
4.Pulp Fiction- what can I add, with the exception of how bad ultimates three is all of us agreeing is next to impossible...for this movie to make it on all our list says more then I'll be able to.
3. Leon- No matter what version you watch, the movie is awesome Jean Reno is awesome as Leon, gary oldman as the villain...its a wrap awesome flick
2.Texas Chainsaw Massacre- the orginal not that Jessica Beal platinum dunes remake. The orginal 1974 is the only way to go, Its one of the few movies that after watching I felt like I needed to take a shower. You feel dirty and sweaty like you've been chased around the texas landscape by a mad man with a chainsaw. The first time you see leatherface its truely creepy. and unlike the later horror franchises the ending is awesome.
1. Rocky- before mr. T and the end of the cold war, before Tommy Gunn and superfight two...there was just rocky. A million to one shot, A local fighter getting a shot at the heavywieght champion of the world, Not wanting to beat apollo but just go the distances...the first rocky is fantastic.
thats my list, chances are it would change by next week and if I were to do my favorite movies it wouldnt be the same as the one above, close but not the same.
