  1. The movies themselves may fluctuate in quality, but here are some good Robert Downey Jr. performances (that I've seen)-
    Weird Science
    Zodiac
    A Scanner Darkly
    Natural Born Killers
    Two Girls and A Guy

    I'm sure there are others...

In the theater, after the Nick Fury scene, this asian teenager behind me said VERY LOUDLY, "WHY IS HE BLACK?!"
I about-faced on him and his group of friends to nerd out at them ("BECAUSE! in the ULTIMATE UNIVERSE blah blah blah..."), but he and his friends just looked embarrassed and intimidated by me. I think they thought I was going to go all "black rage!" on them or something. Ridiculous notion. But how rude, you know?

  2. Don't forget that SCARECROW WILL BE IN THE DARK KNIGHT!
I was surprised that you guys listed off Batman villains that have already been on the silver screen.
I personally would maybe like a very crime-noir inspired film with the Ventriloquist, Scarface & the Mad Hatter. It would still be Batman dealing with crazies but with an added-twist of absinth and opium-inspired psycotropicality courtesy of Lewis Carroll. And yes, psychotropicality is a made-up word. All that might seem tame though after TDK. This film looks like it could be F'ed up.
Or the Riddler. I could go for the Riddler.

BTW, I also heard, and I don't know how true it is, but I heard that David Goyer has zero interest in doing anything with the Penguin. Evah.

  3. Did I say David Goyer???
I meant to say Christopher Nolan.

  4. I can't believe I forgot about Weird Science and Zodiac. I've yet to see the other movies listed. I loved Weird Science and Zodiac. The only thing is that Downy had more of a supporting role in both of those. Not to take away from how great he was in both of them. I'm the idiot now!
Thats crazy that that person shouted that out. (way too many thats) What a moron.
I haven't forgoten about the Scarecrow. I have a feeling we see his death in this new film.
Clayface hasn't been in a film yet. I think that could be kinda cool if done right.
I do like the idea of having the Ventriloqist in the 3rd movie. That could really be effed up. I'm down. For some reason I think having 2Face and the Riddler in the 3rd movie could be pretty sick though.

  5. Why on earth are you excited for The Happening, Rian? The quality of M. Night Shyamalan's movies have been dropping steadily since The Sixth Sense, and the plot of The Happening looks insanely retarded. It might be one of the worst ideas for a horror movie I've ever seen, and makes absolutely no sense.

  6. In reference to Karl's situation with someone yelling out loud about Nick Fury in Iron Man: I saw the movie in White Marsh, MD, which is rather close to Baltimore where the African American population is much greater than it is in the middle of nowhere where I live, and when Sam Jackson appeared in the shadows after the credits, some white guy in the back of the theater shouted, "Hey, it's that black guy!" The theater was mostly empty at this point since the majority of the crowd had left during the credits, but a large group of black guys got in a verbal fist fight with the white dude who yelled from across the theater and I could barely hear what was being said by Jackson and Downey Jr. onscreen (not that they said much).

Robert Downey Jr. is awesome in Zodiac, A Scanner Darkly, and Natural Born Killers. He's also good in A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, but he's not really the main character in any of those (though the younger version of him played by Shia LaBeouf is the main character in Saints). The biggest role I'd seen him in before Iron Man was Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, which he was awesome in as well.

In a third Batman movie I'd honestly like to see them focus on Two-Face. Presumably they're going to set him up in Dark Knight while not fully getting into his character, so I'd like to see him be the main baddie in the third one. While I'd like to see some other villains (mainly Riddler and Firefly <-- for reals, yo!), I think it'd be wise to focus on a single villain the third time around. The first movie had Ra's and Scarecrow, and the second has Joker, Two-Face, and Scarecrow, so I personally think the third should deal solely with Two-Face.

Scott, as I believe I mentioned in the episode, I liked Unbreakable, The Village, and (to an extent) The Sixth Sense. I don't feel that Shayamalan's career has been on a steady decline as much as he's been jumping back and forth between quality flicks and crummy ones. I'm not sure why you think the plot of The Happening looks "insanely retarded", but I think it looks intriguing and kinda neat. Honestly, not much about the film or it's plot has been given away yet, but that's probably one of the things that's drawing me to the movie. I like the mystery behind it. I have been excited for every Shayamalan movie regardless of whether I eventually ended up liking them or not, because the trailers are always mysterious and leave me wondering what to expect, and The Happening is no different. Also, as I mentioned on the show, I love original horror/thriller concepts, and for better or worse, Shayamalan is one of the only filmmakers who consistently tries out new concepts and ideas for me to absorb instead of just making sequels, remakes, or movies based on pre-existing properties.

  7. Btw, a little preemptive, but mentioned in this episode (because I'm finishing listening to it today), but I whole-heartedly ENJOYED the hell out of Speed Racer.
I saw your blog, Rian, and you gave it four stars, which is cool.
But that movie was so. much. FUN.
Everybody who is saying, "I'll see it when it comes out on dvd" *COUGH*JESSE*COUGH* , unless you have a home theater like the ones on MTV's Cribs, you are missing such a great THEATER experience.
It's the Wachowski Brothers, people. Say what you will about their 'eeehhhhhh' films (imo, matrix 2 & 3), you can't deny that watching the Matrix films in the theater was fucking amazing.
NOW you have the chance to see insane visual eye candy that kicks the shit out of the Matrix's somber green hues with a technicolor action smorgasbord, and you won't see it in the theater? There is an insane leap in logic there that I can't comprehend; you people who won't see it in the theater. BELIEVE ME, Speed Racer is totally THEATER-WORTHY.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go see it in the theater, JESSE! I'll personally refund your money, I AM TOTALLY SERIOUS HERE, if you regret seeing it in the theater. Seriously, I will put $10 in the mail for you.
    Think about it.

  8. We'll definitely be talking about Speed Racer on episode 26 (or at least I will), but I agree that the movie was a hell of a lot of fun to watch and definitely worth seeing on the big screen. I recommended it to Jesse as well, and do so to anyone else reading this. More on the movie next Sunday...

  9. Oh I see. Well, I think each successive M. Night Shyamalan movie has been worse and worse since The Sixth Sense, with Lady in the Water being unwatchable.

I thought you knew what The Happening was about since it's been out there on the Internet for a few months. If you want to know how stupid this movie really is (and save yourself ten bucks) go to: http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/23504012.html?#cutid1

  11. Oh, also, there's a new J.J. Abrams show this fall on FOX. Thought you might be interested, although it's become clear to me that the real genius of Lost is Lindelof and Cuse, not necessarily Abrams.

  12. While I don't mind a spoiler or production photo here or there, I don't tend to actively search out movie scripts or other ways of finding out the major plot details of movies before seeing them. I likes me a good surprise when I see a movie. So, no, I still don't really know what The Happening is about.
