  1. I always hate when something like frankencastle comes out and the company/writer calls negative feedback as "fan boy crying." it's a lame idea period. If anything I'd blame the false praise as "fan boy love" vampire mole men and frankencaste? we wonder why comic books are viewed by 89% of the world as lame.

Turning the punisher into Frankenstein is a horrible idea. Its one of those stories that people will being saying "hey remember that horrible story when they turned the punisher into Frankenstien" "no I dont remember that at all! he was a frankenstein? like a real frankenstien? what were they thinking?"

Just like the angel punisher. Like cap wolf and thor frog and all sorts of nonsense they throw around from time to time.

And to make matters worse, Marvel actually has a Frankenstein character in the universe. why not just use him instead of taking the most "normal" and street level character of the marvel universe and doing this? they'd rather cash in on the punishers current success. its lame on all fronts.

great episode as always gents I really enjoying listening to the show during work killing the boredom of factory work. Please don't go two weeks with out a new episode.

  2. We're working on being more timely.

And for the record, people love Thor Frog. The fucking Pet Avengers #1 went into a second printing for god's sake. That's a travesty compared to Franken-Castle.

Why does every Punisher issue have to be street level and gritty? He's got another monthly book you can read if Werewolf By Night cameos are benath you. Let a brother try something new. Like I said in the show, it's a comic, not a movie. In four months Punisher won't be a Frankenstein anymore, so why get hung up on this arc?

  3. why can't thor be a frog? why can't spiderman become the loch ness monster? why can't cable go back in time and become george washington? they can! it dont make it a good idea... to quote chris rock

"I could steer my car with my feet it don't make it a good idea!"

personally I only read punisher MAX (not anymore I cant get into steve dillions work anymore) Because I like the idea of an aging vietnam vet fighting low level crime. There are some really powerful moments along the way on ennis run. Theres one where he tells someone about his dream that is heartbreaking when you read it. I like that realism with my punisher, you ask me why the punisher has to always been grim and gritty, They have an entire universe of characters to fight monsters and be brought back to life and to become monsters and fight demons or vampires or mole men or hamsters or what ever they want...can't I have ONE character that shoots bad guys with an M4 and doesn't deal with all the other stuff.

  4. oh and I laughed when jesse said the new rambo has the same plot as the last one...

Rambo:first blood part 2- rambo rescues POWs in vietnam from russians

Rambo III- rambo rescues trautman from russians in Afghanistan with help from the Taliban!

Rambo- rambo rescues aid workers...no russians involved.

Rambo V- rambo rescues ladies from mexican drug cartels.

they've all been the same dude with the exception of the first one.

  5. "can't I have ONE character that shoots bad guys with an M4 and doesn't deal with all the other stuff."

Yes, you can. It's called Punisher Max.

  6. for the sake of discussion if in the next issue of wildcats grifter dies and the only way to save him would be for him to come back as a fish man. so He's back he has the mask and he shoots people but every 20 minutes they need to dunk him in a tank of water or he'll die again and not even the fish people can save him.

lets say at the same time as the "fishter storyline" was going on...he also had a monthly book where everything was fine...wouldn't the fact that in another book he was half fish bother you a little bit? or would you just be like well grifter won't be a fish man forever so I'll give it a try.

  7. If there were a Grifter MAX book coming out at the same time in which I could read about regular old Grifter, I'd have no reason to complain.

Sure, "Fishter" isn't something I'd have ever come up with on my own, but if I knew it were just for one story arc I don't think I'd have any problem dealing with it for a few months, just like I have no problem giving Franken-Castle a chance. If I were given the ultimatum that Grifter would remain "Fishter" indefinitely on the other hand, I wouldn't be happy. I can't stress enough that this is only one story arc, and Punisher will be back to normal before you know it. Not to mention (as I have repeatedly), there's ANOTHER Punisher book out there you can read in the meantime.

Grifter was in a wheelchair for the duration of Wildcats V.3.0, but I still read it, and while I'd have never thought that would be a good idea, it turns out that those stories were awesome.

More similar to your "Fishter" premise, check out this cover to The Kindred II #4:

    http://tinyurl.com/yh9k838

In that mini-series Grifter turns into a cat-person a la The Island Of Dr. Moreau. I read it and it didn't ruin my life.

I'm not afraid of change so long as it 1.) is in moderation, or 2.) turns out to be a good change. We can be sure that Franken-Castle will apply to #1 because it's only gonna last 4 more issues. As for #2, I don't know about anyone else, but I'm going to at least give this story a few more issues (if not all 5) before I declare that it's the worst premise ever to cross the pages of The Punisher.

Honestly, how different is this story from a DC Comics Elseworlds book? Take a character and turn him/her on their head in whatever way the writer feels fit. The only difference here is that this story takes place within a previously existing series rather than a mini, but how much does that really matter? I'll bet that it won't matter at all when issue 16 rolls around and the next story arc begins.

I'm actually trying to track down the Angel Punisher issues on Ebay right now because I think the idea is intriguing. If nothing else, it was at least drawn by Bernie Wrightson, which is a plus in my book.

  8. Lets also not forget that Rian works in a comic book shop and can probably read whatever he wants for free if he REALLY wants to (meaning- despite any comic book store rules that may be in place about employees reading books).

So at $4/pop, fuck anything you don't like. There are better things to spend your money on (like Rucka's and William's run on Detective Comics: Batwoman [with the back-up Question stories], Brian Wood's Northlanders, or Walking Dead, Invincible, or the new Powers run).

I cut loose a couple comic books recently because I realized I just didn't give a shit about the characters, and I would rather save myself the $8/month. One of them I still haven't read the last 6 issues I bought.

Would I be reading them if I could read them for free? Probably. But $4 is just enough dough to really piss me off when I've spent it on something I give no shits about.

Breaking it down to brass tacks though, Joel- Rian is correct in that you need to just enjoy Punisher MAX and forget the rest. It's a better use of your time, energy, and $ to just forget about any book that's doing weird-ass stupid shit that rubs you the wrong way. I'm totally with you on the "why not use a pre-established Frankenstein-like character or a brand new one to tell this story?" It's the same question I have about the new Sherlock Holmes film. Why does it have to be extreme Sherlock Holmes. Why couldn't it be named something else? Because established names=money. Just like that graphic novel where Edgar Allen Poe fights vampires with the help of a young Abe Lincoln that they're adapting into a film. It's all about the recognizable names. So yes, they're cashing in on Punisher's popularity and familiarity to sell a supernatural story. Everything will of course be alright in the end. Just like how Invincible's costume is about to change back to the blue and yellow. They'll always default back to the original idea eventually (Spider-man revealed his identity to the worl-oop! Nevermind).

(P.S. For the record I still don't listen to the podcast. I just happened to stop by the comments section and figured I would throw in my 2 cents, seeing as I was aware of the Franken-Castle situation.)
