Rian, my first guess was The Way of the Gun, but Snatch was my second guess. I can't believe The Way of the Gun wasn't even mentioned.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'll post my top ten tonight.
1. no country for old men (07)- what can I add? best movie of the last decade, Hands down.
ReplyDelete2. Cowboy bebop: knocking on heavens door (01)- if this is a surprise, hi my name is Joel we have never met before.
3. Children of Men (06)- what rian said.
4. Brick (05)- if not one of the best movies of the last decade at the very least one of the coolest.
5. The Brothers Bloom (09)- see above. ^
6.The road (09)- heart breaking, bleak, depressing, unforgettable....beautifully shot and viggo turns in an oscar worthy performance that no one paid attention to.
7. Zodiac (07)- great cast, when even the bit players are giving A plus performances you need to give a movie props.
8. The way of the gun(00)- Brain is right, shame on you both.
9. casino royale (06)- They shook away any memory of Halle Berry and a giant sun laser chasing bond in an invisible car...with the opening 15 minutes everything after that was gravy.
10. Rocky Balboa (06)- the first time I saw a rocky movie on the big screen. saw it on opening night, About 35 minutes into it the film burnt...which I had never seen. the crowd started Chanting rocky...it was pretty amazing.
honorable mentions
o Brother, where art thou (2000)
freddy vs Jason (2003)- slither?!?!?! SLither!?!?!?!?!? really rian?!?!?!?
Anchorman (2004)- Milk was a bad choice.
The girl next door (2004)- Marketed as a American Pie clone, the movie has a lot of Heart and was a pleasant surprise. Elisha Cuthbert.
spiderman 2 (2004)- best superhero movie ever.
walk the line (05)- One of my favorite Bio- movies.
Mission Impossible III (06)- Maybe My favorite of the three
The assassination of Jesse James by the coward robert ford. (07) A little to long and there are some strange scenes. Casey Affleck once again proves he's the only Affleck who should be in front of the Camera, Pitt Plays Jesse James awesome and the cinematography is beautiful. Great soundtrack "song for Bob" is my favorite.
The king of Kong:fistful of quarters (07)- steve wiebe is the man.
The departed (06)
MOON (09)- ten nomines for best picture and still they snubbed MOON! sam rockwell was robbed!
Alas, The Way Of The Gun should be on my list. It apparently wasn't popular enough to be on any of the lists I pulled my nominees from, and similar to Snatch, it never occurred to me. For some reason I thought that movie came out in 1998. I'd have probably placed it immediately before or after Spiderman 2.
ReplyDeleteActually Joel, Milk would've been a pretty good choice.
Never seen Cowboy Bebop, Children of Men, The Road, The Way of the Gun, Or Rocky Balboa so there is no way they could have made my list. I do love Casino Royal. I agree that first 15 min is great but not good enough for my top 10.
ReplyDeleteI debated for a long time about Anchorman. I love love love that movie.
Walk the Line and MI3 were both great but again not good enough to crack the top 10.
The Departed made my top 10 several times before finally being bumped.
the way of the gun does seem to be older then 2000. Half the fun of the list is to name things that haven't already been said by you guys. I do agree with a lot of your choices that you guys made in the episode just wanted to throw some others out there as well.
ReplyDeletecan I talk about inglorious basterds for a minute?! For starters I loved Quentin, you'll notice that is past tense.
I really hated Death Proof, The chase is awesome but the 115 minutes before it and the five minutes after it I don't enjoy at all. I disliked the Movie so much it kind of made me question my Love of all his movies, Including KIll Bill.
I really love Reservoir dogs and Pulp fiction both are completely nuts and have all his signature flare, but they never seem silly or purposely cheap. I really feel like QT after Jackie Brown didnt do so well was sitting in Robert Rodriguez's basement eating nachos and decided he wasn't going to try and make a real movie again.
So he does KIll Bill (I loved it, I think his first two are better movies, But I think its an acceptable level of B movie in it. ) Then he does death Proof which I think is total Garbage, its uninteresting, the characters are mostly all unlikeable. But your "not allowed" to dislike it because its supposed to be cheesey and a "bad movie" thats how it was planned. I don't want QT making bad movies on purpose the dude made one of my favorite movies of all time. Make a real Movie!!!!
so out comes Basterds. I have low expectations but I go and check it out. so the opening scene starts...its fantastic....here lies the problem, everyone says (and they are all right) that the opening scene is awesome, the only downside is 20 minutes into the movie you've already seen the best scene. not good.
Christoph Waltz is great, then we are introduced to Brad pitt and co. who are clearly from a different movie altogether, I refuse to believe that these cartoon characters are from the same universe that the opening scene takes place in. and further more they aren't even important to the film. Its called Inglorious Basterds but they dont even matter. the main character is the girl from the opening who owns the movie theater. Its only called that because RR and QT were smoking weed one night and started talking about that "awesome 1978 movie that no ones ever heard of"
theres a lot of little things I dislike about the movie. but I won't get into it, I enjoyed it, I just don't think its as great as Jesse seems to think it is.
How dare you Lolar! Just kidding. I understand what you are saying but to me I wasn't expecting a lot. The first scene sucked me in and I never escaped even though you are right and it does feel like the movie could have been done without the Inglorious Basterds. I was just so sucked into the movie that I was sold. You do make some good points. I tend to agree with you on Grindhouse. I've seen it once and don't feel like I ever need to see it again.
ReplyDeleteI'm somewhere in that nether region between you guys where Inglourious Basterds is concerned. I find it very enjoyable to watch, but I don't hold it in terribly high regard. I think that Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Reservoir Dogs are all better than Basterds.
