I'm not worried about Zach Galifianakis. He's all over TV and movies right now, and doesn't only play the off-the-wall character.
ReplyDeleteHis popular "paycheck" movies where he acts completely goofy are: The Hangover, Due Date, and Dinner for Schmucks.
While not nearly as popular or marketable as those movies, his performances in
Bored to Death, Up in the Air, Into the Wild, Youth in Revolt, and Between Two Ferns are a lot different. These aren't all necessarily starring roles, but they show off his ability to play more than one character.
While not as popular as The Hangover, Bored to Death is pretty popular right now, and we all love his character on that show.
I think the difference between Will Farrell and Zach Galifianakis is that Farrell did 10 movies one-after-the-other, all playing the same kind of character. Zach stars in indie films, and takes roles that keep him in the public eye, but not as the loud, goofy, annoying guy.
I had no idea I was this passionate about Zach Galifianakis.
So basically you are gay for Zach. I do like him. Between two Ferns is hilarious. In both Up In The Air and Youth in Revolt he is barely in those movies so it hard to say anything about him in those movies. No one went to see Up In The Air to see Zach.
ReplyDeleteSame with Into The Wild. He's in that for like a minute. I think that better examples of his noteworthy indie work would be Visioneers and It's Kind Of A Funny Story.
ReplyDeleteRegardless, I'd bet that 95% of people (or more) have never even heard of those movies. I like Zach as well, but if all of his major films continue to feature him as the loud moron, I think we're in trouble. I mean, 5 or 6 major comedy roles from now, if he's still playing the Hangover/Due Date guy, even a few small indie films that most people haven't seen most likely won't save his overall image from over-saturation.
The one standout performance that is both different from his "standard" characters and probably seen by a lot of people is Bored To Death. Still, his name is way more likely to bring to mind the guy who wears a baby on his chest in The Hangover than it is the phallic-centric comic artist in Bored To Death.
I wasn't sure how popular Bored to Death really is. I've seen all the episodes and they are really really good, but I rarely hear anything about it except in between movies on HBO. Needless to say, he's incredible in that show, and a lot funnier than his Hangover performance, but it's different comedy.
ReplyDeleteThe All-Star Superman review was a little shocking for me. I've heard really good things about book and movie. Your guys' review made me order the book. Does that mean "The Sidetracked bump" is getting one person to buy something?
I wish there was some way we could get a commission from the sale of that All-Star Superman book.
ReplyDeleteI love anything that Frank Quitely touches, so All-Star Superman (the comic) has a lot going for it from the get-go. From a story standpoint, it's one of my favorite Superman comics, which isn't saying much because I rarely read Superman-centric titles. Looking at it as just a comic, and not a Superman title, it's not going to break my Top 10 anytime soon. It's a really fun read with some incredible artwork and a lot of neat ideas, but I wouldn't put it on too high a pedestal.
The movie does a good job of relaying the comic in a condensed form. Since the comic ran kind of like a series of loosely connected one or two issue stories, the stuff that they dropped for the film doesn't ruin the overall experience too much. Especially, I'm sure, if you haven't read the source material to know what you're missing. The visual style and voice acting being what they are, I thought that the All-Star Superman movie did a respectable job of representing the All-Star Superman comic.
AS you can probably guess from listening to the podcast, I love All Star Superman. it is in my top 10 of all time. It is weird and Grant Morrison is a weird guy but I think its a great combination of story and art. And my favorite thing is that Superman uses his brain. He comes off as really smart. I love it.
