Good show guys. Totally agree with Jesse that "Wilfred" was... slow paced. Louie was/is awesome. Curious to hear what Jesse would think hearing Rifftrax Harry Potters!
ReplyDeletethe MST3k movie is what got me into the show back in the late 90s. i'd seen a couple episodes via a friend (i never had cable) but the movie is what really won me over, and i still think it's one of the funniest installments despite the MST3k people not having enjoyed making it.
ReplyDelete"great, Brak siphoned our gaaaaaass!"
Nico: I think he'd either cry or break something.
ReplyDeleteRoss: How much MST3K have you watched? I've probably seen about half of the almost 200 episodes now, and while I enjoy the movie, there are a lot of eps that I'd recommend before it.
i don't think i've seen that many, i'm not sure exactly how many, i couldn't say. i like a lot of the episodes, of course, but one thing i appreciate about the movie is that the jokes are a bit broader, in that they don't do as much referencing of obscure actors and TV shows i've never heard of and in-jokes that fly over my head. i'm not really crazy about reference humor to begin with, like just referencing something isn't inherently funny to me.
ReplyDeletei hesitate to say the movie is "dumbed down" but i'm just not as learned as the MST3k people so a lot of their jokes leave me scratching my head because i haven't seen what they're joking about. i guess for that reason i'd recommend the movie to most newbies because it's less impenetrable entry point. i also think the skits in the movie are much stronger than any of the skits in the episodes, which i don't usually find that funny. i love the part in the movie with the Hubble falling from space, haha. although the movie definitely suffers from Frank's absence.
i think my favorite episodes i've seen are Mitchell and Soultaker, and even though i've seen the Mitchell episode like 800 times there are still jokes in it that i don't understand, heh. XD
oh yeah, what are your favorite episodes?
ReplyDeleteIt is a shame that Frank wasn't in the movie. As I mentioned on the episode, since I'm so into the show, the skits felt odd to me. Not better or worse, just different. Seeing Tom Servo's bedroom was pretty jarring. Also, the lack of the theme song bugged me. They couldn't have put it in there at the beginning? It's one of those TV themes that describes the premise of the show, which seems like it would be perfect for a movie that will most likely reach a wider audience than the cult show it's based on.
ReplyDeleteI've seen close to 1/2 of the episodes of the show (there are almost 200 total), and I watched most of those over the last year and a half or so, which is when I really got into MST3K. I never had cable/satellite until about3 years ago, so the only times I could watch the show when it was on were when I was visiting my grandparents or something. I always wanted to see more, but the DVDs were always out of my price range before. They're still expensive, but I've been spending a lot of time price-matching and finding good deals, so I've gotten most of them for about 1/2 price.
Of the episodes I've seen, my favorites are probably The Final Sacrifice (a fairly standard pick), Final Justice, Werewolf, Laserblast, Horrors Of Spider Island, Master Ninja I, and Lost Continent.
I can't wait for volume 21 of the DVD sets because it's going to have all 5 of the Gamera episodes they did. I haven't seen any of those before. I think it comes out in August or September.

ReplyDeleteI really wish I could have jumped in on that food conversation! Don Pablo's rules! I'm also a bad Marylander and hate seafood. My biggest thing is that I can't stand the texture of the meat. Biting into a shrimp or the sloppy innards of a crab claw is the most disgusting feeling to me. I do however enjoy crab cakes, soups, and dips. I went to a Todai in Las Vegas and loved it! All you can eat sushi, asian cuisine, and miso soup!
ReplyDeleteCaptain America!!!
we are going to don pablo's when I come out for spx, and the chinese place run by children.
ReplyDeleteseafood can be delicious, a good hunk of salmon off the grill is delightful.
if/when either of you come out to boston we'd hit up my favorite restaurant fire& ice. All you can eat, you pick what you want and a sauce and they grill it all up for you in the middle of the restaurant, its so good.
@Brian - I could tell your ears were burning the entire time Jesse and I were talking about Don Pablo's.
ReplyDelete@Joel - It sounds like we've planned out our meals for your next visit better than we have our plan of attack for the con. Also, is this Fire & Ice restaurant anything like the movie of the same name? I sure hope so.
yes fire and Ice is a frank frazetta themed restaurant.
ReplyDeleteplan for the con? we have a banner what more do we need?
