yeah, Machete was awful, i barely made it through it.
ReplyDeletei don't find Hobo very grindhousey, it seemed more 80s to me, like one of those surprise finds at the local hole-in-the-wall video store that rents out betamax tapes.
in any case i thought Hobo was pretty boring. it felt too Troma to me which i hate, but i also didn't think it was gory enough. if you're gonna make a movie like this you gotta go far over the top to make the movie worthwhile. there were a couple good limb-destruction moments, but there are tons of way gorier movies out there, both in sheer amount of gore and how creative the gore is, so if you're making something like Hobo then you gotta top those other films, or have a good story or interesting characters instead, if i'm going to get anything out of yours.
I think the comparison to Troma rings true. The biggest problem for Hobo is that it was just boring. Whether it is going for "grind house" or shock or 80's action it just flat out didn't do it well.
ReplyDeleteRoss do you watch any of the shows that we discuss on the podcast?
no, i don't watch any of the shows, i don't have TV. :( i only watch shows when they come out later on netflix and even then only rarely because it's such an investment. my mom rents Dexter and i've seen a few episodes of that but it didn't really grab me, and i saw the pilot episode of Walking Dead which i wasn't crazy about but i'll probably check that out on netflix.
ReplyDeletei've also never heard of Louie, and i've heard people say Breaking Bad is awesome but i have no idea what the show is even about. i'm really out of the loop. XD
I've seen very few Troma films, but I definitely see the comparison with Hobo over the comparison to actual Grindhouse films (which I've oddly been watching a few of lately; more on that next episode).
ReplyDeleteBreaking Bad is about a high school chemistry teacher who finds out that he has cancer and can't afford treatment on his teacher's salary, so he teams up with a former student of his-turned drug dealer to make and sell meth. From there, the show goes in indescribably ridiculous, diverse, unpredictable, and awesome directions. I don't expect that synopsis to make you run off to watch the full series on Netflix or anything, but that's the basic jist.
Nice job on the show guys! Again, I'm listening to this way late, but it's awesome and sometimes funny to hear Walking Dead talk after I've already seen what comes next.
ReplyDeleteRian's Double Dexter review is hilarious to me.
I'm not one to say "GAH! You have to watch THIS!" but I really like American Horror Story. I think the show is compelling to watch. Totally true that the characters can be unlikable, but I feel they're realistic (so-so with the daughter). I think the freaky things that happen are subtle. Also, what the viewers see/know isn't always seen/known by the house owners; hence them not completely running out (something they actually try in episode 7 I believe). I'm not saying you have to like it or watch it, but wanted to give my opinion of it. I think it's weird how Rian watched 5 episodes (roughly 3 hrs, 20 mins) and said he didn't like it?!
You're not the first person to bring up the fact that, despite my not liking American Horror Story, I sat through 5 episodes of it. There are 3 reasons for this:
ReplyDelete1.) I didn't want to dismiss the show after one episode and have people harping on me about how I hadn't watched enough.
2.) I was organizing my comics while I watched it, so while I wouldn't say that it was "on in the background", it was an accompaniment to something else I was doing.
3.) I wanted to give the show a fair shake, which I think I did by watching 5 of the 6 episodes which were out at the time.
I already gave my actual opinions on the show on the podcast, so I won't rehash them all here. If I had to sum up all of my problems with the show in one sentence, it would be this: The pacing was horrible, the story was a jumbled mess, and it doesn't deserve to have the word "horror" in the title. Those points are, of course, just my opinion.
I have a bit of a hard time understanding why the show seems so popular despite the fact that I view it as being of a particularly low quality, but when you stop to think about how many fans of the Resident Evil and Underworld movies there must be to keep those shitballs coming out year after year, it kind of makes sense.
I hope that doesn't sound too insulting to those who enjoy American Horror Story (though I don't particularly mind offending fans of Underworld or the RE movies), but the simple fact of the matter is that the films and TV shows people like are completely subjective. My easy out in an argument like this is to simply say: I love Chill Factor.
