  1. i also give Robocop 5 stars! that's one of those movies that i'm still perplexed that i don't actually own. i gotta fix that. Robocop isn't my favorite movie or anything and it's not even my favorite Verhoeven movie (TOTAL RECALL!), but overall, shit doesn't get better than that. the fucking toxic waste dude who explodes when hit by a car alone, haha. i'm surprised at you, Jesse, wanting Robocop to be all un-silly and grim and "futuristic," come on! ;) take the satire silliness out of Robocop and i'm not really sure what you have. boring "badass" cyborg action, i guess. which could be cool but it's not Robocop.

Starship Troopers is also great, i concur.

  2. I liked Robocop. I didn't completely love it. I'm not as into that silliness that you and Rian are into. I think a serious Robocop could be awesome. It doesn't take away from the original. Why can't there be both. And when I say serious/badass I don't mean Micheal Bay. I think the Darren Aronofsky version would be pretty dang cool.
I am excited to watch Starship Troopers.

And I've never seen Total Recall either.

  3. i'm not saying they can't both exist or that a "serious" Robocop would somehow take away from the original, nobody's more cool-with-remakes than me, man. the originals will never change (go ahead, remake Alien and Jaws! i don't care).

they've actually done some serious Robocop stuff, i thought the third one and the TV movies were pretty poker-faced. but yeah, i mean if Aronofsky made a Robocop that's cool but it seems like taking the satire out would just make it Generic Cyborg Cop or something. i don't know if i'm interested in seeing a super-serious Robocop in the same way i'm not sure i'm interested in seeing a light-hearted comedy Alien movie. and of course anything can be good if the execution is good, maybe i'd be proven wrong by a jokey Alien romp.

i guess this is a stupid debate because there is no Robocop remake to debate about, so okay, you're right. XD you win.

not sure if you'd like Total Recall but you should definitely check it out.

  4. I totally get your point.
And I really don't think they will reboot Robocop and if they do it will probably something that neither one of us would like

Didn't they make light-hearted comedy Aliens movies called AvP (zing!)

I do want to see Total Recall its been on my must see list for like ever. I do love Arnold.

  5. I think taking the silliness and over-the-top-itude out of Robocop would be similar to removing the silliness and over-the-top-ness out of a film like Gremlins. Sure, you'd still have little monsters killing people, and maybe it'd be good, but it would no longer be as fun.

I feel inclined to say that Jesse probably won't like Starship Troopers, but I also feel that my having said that will make him like it. Kind of like Schroedinger's Cat, applying my opinion of Jesse's opinion to his opinion will change his opinion.

Total Recall probably is Verhoeven's best movie. Starship Troopers holds a special place in my heart because it came out at the perfect time for me to become obsessed with it. I wanna say I was like 12 or 13 and totally into Aliens already, so more space marines was precisely what the doctor ordered. Also, it had some nude scenes, which would have been of interest to me at the time. You could tell which movies I loved as a kid because I drew comics about them. I totally have a sketchbook with an unfinished Starship Troopers comic in it around here somewhere.

  6. MAN, Jesse, if you love Arnold i'm so surprised you've never seen Total Recall, it's probably the best of his movies/performances next to Predator and Junior (YES, JUNIOR). now that i know you like Arnold i'm more confident you'll like TR.

other than all the staple Arnold flicks i also really like Collateral Damage even though i don't think most people do.

    haha, nice AVP jab. XD

Rian: yeah, a "serious" Gremlins is a great way to put it. i'd imagine some Hollywood exec or Gremlins fanboy thinking it would be badass to make Stripe stab people's eyes out or have Mohawk eat babies and rape people. DUDE, IT'S SO REALISTIC, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT REAL MOGWAI WOULD DO ;)

i don't remember seeing Starship Troopers as a kid, i think i didn't see it until college, but i still loved. i don't know if you've ever played the computer game Starcraft but Starship Troopers is as close as we've gotten to Starcraft: The Movie. or vica versa, Starcraft as Starship Troopers: the Video Game (minus Doogie Howser). i gotta see Troopers again, i should rent that.

  7. oh yeah, another thing about Total Recall, Rob Bottin also did the special effects for that. i believe he won an Oscar (or was at least nominated) for it.

  8. WHAT?! I'm just now listening to Sidetracked and catching up? Yes. Babies and freelance work will do that. LOVED this episode. For some reason to me it was like a fast paced 80s movie from the future.
