i used to like Fifth Element a lot but i tried to watch it pretty recently and i hated it, heh. it's got some cool stuff in it, some awesome Moebius designs of course, i like Ian Holm, i like that the villain is a planet (haha), but i don't know, i had a bad reaction to it the last time i watched it and couldn't even finish watching. i think it's Bruce Willis, i kind of hate him, he's so smug or something and he kisses Leeloo while she's unconscious, innocently enough, she puts him in his place afterward, but such a nasty thing for him to do but i guess it's supposed to be charming. ugh.
ReplyDeleteand i hate how to kickstart Leeloo into blasting the evil planet he's gotta be like "i love you, blehhhh" then she's like "oh all right! ZAP" i don't really like how it conflates sex and love, which is fine but it does it in a kind of boring way that rubs me the wrong way, i don't know.
i liked Gary Oldman and Tricky's small part before he explodes, though.
i always thought the hand they bring in to clone was one of the hands from the Fifth Element statue from the tomb. i thought if the statue hadn't been destroyed, how it would've gone is they place the stones on the little pillars and then place the statue in the middle and it shoots the beam out of its mouth. so i guess i figured the statue was alive somehow and when cloned it makes Milla Jovovich...? i don't know.
cool music score, though. and the best part is definitely the bartending robot. "doyouwantsomemore" haha
me again!!! in the Kevin Clash documentary did they talk about him playing Splinter in the first 2 TMNT movies at all?! he did both the puppet and Splinter's voice.
ReplyDeleteBruce Willis plays the lovable asshole in The Fifth Element. His character could've been more sympathetic, but I think that would have had a negative effect on the tone of the film. If you think about it, he kinda just plays John McClane in the future. If not from the first 2 Die Hards, definitely the super-cynical, eternally hungover and grumpy John McClane from Die Hard With A Vengeance.
DeleteAlso, it's way corny, but I like the "I love you" scene. I think the set-up of Leeloo resisting the urge to save the day because of she got to the word "War" in the dictionary and was horrified was pretty rushed, but I still like the way it works into the climax. It's funny...the idea is that Leeloo is super-intelligent, so she's working her way through the dictionary at an incredible rate to learn how to speak English, but she doesn't have any second-guesses about society until she gets to the letter "W" and sees the word "War"? What about "Pedophilia", "Rape", "Racism", "Torture", "Murder", or any of the other terrible words that come before "W" in the alphabet?
As for the Kevin Clash documentary, they never even mention the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They basically start with his childhood, move on to his first TV gig on Captain Kangaroo, then go right to all of his Henson work and never turn back. I'd have never known he was in TMNT if you hadn't just mentioned it.
haha, i never thought about the dictionary thing!!! so funny. yeah, SO many terrible words before "war" she should've picked up on. or maybe she did study them but she didn't care, "meh, rape. big deal."
DeleteJim Henson & company did the first two TMNT movies so Clash was among them. Henson + Turtles: http://images.wikia.com/muppet/images/e/e5/Jim_turtles.jpg :D
