what is the Christian Bale skit at the beginning from? what is that??
ReplyDeletei love Donnie Yen!! Ip Man is great, Ip Man 2 is also pretty awesome, it's really similar to Rocky 4. i'm no kung fu buff but you guys should check out some other Donnie Yen movies, like Iron Monkey, Dragon Inn, Flash Point, and Once Upon A Time In China 2.
i'm with you on Hugo, Jesse. not only did i find it boring but i couldn't stand the whole adoration-of-filmmaking aspect. "this is where dreams are born!" or whatever. barf.
i ordered the first 2 Locke & Key books, can't wait to read it!!!
Though I've seen A LOT of Jackie Chan movies, I definitely don't consider myself an aficionado of Kung-Fu movies in general. I've still never seen a Bruce Lee movie. I'd like to check out some more Donnie Yen films after seeing Ip Man, though.
DeleteWoah, that's awesome that you ordered the first 2 volumes of Locke & Key! I hope you're not disappointed. We should get a commission. Someone call up Joe Hill.
Oh, and I'm not sure what that opening quote Jesse chose is from either, but is it me or does that one guy's impersonation sound more like Orson Welles than Morgan Freeman?
DeleteThere is a whole set of those skits from "The Dark Knight Rises" that was released early last week. They are pretty funny. The guy that does Morgan Freeman isn't the best but the Christian Bale guy is really good. I thought they were pretty funny and I need an opening

I'm excited to hear what you think about Locke & Key Ross!
i'd heard of Locke & Key here and there but i don't really like Lovecraft/Lovecraftian stuff so i never bothered, but then my IDW editor told me more about it and it sounded pretty cool, then shortly after that you were raving about it, Rian, and now Jesse. i figured i had to see what all the fuss was about!
Deletethe Christian Bale imitation is really good, but yeah the Morgan Freeman one not so much. i was confused at first about what the joke was until there was some tip-off in the skit that he's supposed to be Morgan Freeman.
Honestly, if the town that the story takes place in weren't called Lovecraft, I'd never have even thought to call Locke & Key "Lovecraftian". Even now I wouldn't really call it that. It's got an old mansion and takes place near the sea, and there's a bit of monster-y stuff (kind of...), but all in all it's more of an adventure/mystery in the vein of The Monster Squad or something. But with some really serious themes and occasional ultra violence. It's the whole "family moves into a new house, the kids discover something magical/mysterious that the adults don't know about/believe in, and danger looms" genre that doesn't (to my knowledge) really have a name. Kind of like Jumanji, but way darker and more awesome? I dunno. It's really good, but there's no chanting cultists or giant tentacled demon gods or fish people.
Delete...yet.
yeah, it didn't sound Lovecrafty to me either, but before my editor explained it to me all i'd seen about it seemed to categorize it as Lovecraftian in some way so i always thought that's what it was like. i guess Lovecraftian can be pretty broad, though, Lovecraft himself didn't write totally about the Old Ones and stuff all the time. i can't wait to read it, regardless. :D
DeleteHoly shit you two sold me on Locke & Key! I just bought vol 1.
ReplyDeleteAwesome show. Really was. I think I'm going to buy Glory to simply support your supporters (and sounds badass).
