congratulations on the new baby coming soon, Jesse!!! i hope the c-section goes well for Jenny, that sounds scary to me!
ReplyDeletealso congrats on winning the tournament! but holy shit, you have ~5000 Magic cards?!?! i played Magic for about 8 years total and i don't think i ever had that many!!! dang. O_O
i kind of disagree with you about the older cards being more powerful, Jesse. definitely some stuff in the early series like Black Lotus and Ancestral Recall and Juzam Djinn and stuff like that, but once Revised hit it was pretty balanced, even with the occasional card people would either abuse or find insane uses for like Necropotence or something. we got back into Magic a year or two ago and i was blown away by how powerful some of the new cards were, it was nuts.
obviously there's the strategy aspect and smart players can build killer decks out of crappy cards and you don't need the crazy new ones to win, but there was definitely an escalation that happened in our playing group. one friend stuck with his deck from back in the day and we'd pretty much hand him his ass every time with our new ridiculous cards.
Thanks Ross! A C-Section is scary. Having gone through it (as much as I was there holding her hand through it) makes it a little easier but it is surgery.
DeleteYeah, I'm a sucker for buying packs and drafting every week adds 45+ cards and that adds up over time especially when you win a bunch of packs.
I think the Alph/Beta stuff was super powerful, but you are right it slowed down a bit and then got crazy and that is kind of when I stopped playing the second time. Magic even knew it and had to bring things back a bit.
There are new cards that are powerful for sure, and some broken cards like Jace The Mind Sculptor (which is now banned in a lot of formats), but around 2003-2008 some crazy stuff was printed.
And then there are sets that just hose other sets. Its hard to rate the power on everything since I missed playing a ton of different sets.
Having PLaneswalker cards now is also a big advantage that the mid-2000s sets didn't have.
All I know is I have a blast playing!
i'm sure everything will go fine but i got my fingers crossed for Jenny and the baby anyway! :)
Deletedespite playing Magic for so long, i've actually never done any tournaments or drafts or anything! i've always just played with my friends and that's it. i'd love to watch a tournament as a spectator but i don't think i'd ever play in one, way too much pressure and i'm not very good the game despite playing for so long.
i'm trying to think of some of the newer powerful cards that we got but i can't remember any off the top of my head, but my friend made a merfolk deck and a kithkin deck that were brutal. years ago who the hell would have thought frickin' merfolk would turn out to be such juggernauts. with new cards i was even able to make my stupid thrull deck from high school into a powerhouse! haha.
i should make a list of some of the better cards i have to see if you're interested in any. i got a bunch of dual lands (i don't think they reprint those anymore) but maybe they have newer cards that have since replaced or eclipsed those in power level? are there any specific older cards you're looking for?
I played in late 1999 and then in like 2001. I don't really know a lot of the old cars so I wouldn't even know what to look for. If you had a list I'd check it out. What sets did you play with? I'm always open to getting new cards :) let me know the cost to mail whatever ones you are looking to get rid of and I can send you son money or something.
