i think uninked pencil artwork can absolutely work, it just depends on how the linework is done and the colors (or greytones). i did a handful of Glory issues in just pencil, and Wet Moon has had pencil linework since 2007 and people often mistake it for ink. i know what you guys mean about that muddy look, though, and i think that tends to happen when the pencil work isn't darkened up enough.
ReplyDeletei can't think of any third movies in any major series that people generally prefer, but for me personally i can list a few; Gamera 3 (among kaiju fans this is pretty much accepted as the best), Undisputed 3, Step Up 3, and there are quite a few Romero fans who consider Day of the Dead the best of his zombie movies, although i think the average consensus is Dawn. :\
there have to be some other ones, though...! does Friday the 13th Part 3 count? it's definitely the best out of the first 3 movies, hehheh. i also think Bourne Ultimatum is the best of the Bourne trilogy, and my favorite Indiana Jones is Last Crusade but again, i think the general consensus is Raiders is the best so maybe Crusade doesn't count.
Pencils by themselves can work and we talked about a few but I think it is in the minority. Most are just darkened penciled colored in a muddy way. I think there are artists and colorists that have worked together to make it work. The stuff in Glory looked great. I think Joe Mad and Leinil Yu were the worst though.
DeleteI think horror movies are excluded from the rule of three. They are their own entities. Step Up 3? lol
Did you see Iron Man 3, Ross?
i can't even remember what your examples were of pencil artwork that you thought worked well! i'm so forgetful. i'm glad you thought the Glory stuff worked, thanks! i think the colorist also knew how to work with it, plus the linework was dark enough.
Deletei haven't seen Iron Man 3, no, i'll probably just rent it when it's on Netflix. i can't get myself out to the movies anymore unless it's something i'm really pumped about. :( i only see 1 or 2 movies in the theater per year these days, if that.
Day Of The Dead and The Bourne Ultimatum are actually my favorites of those specific franchises now that you mention it. I still think you'd be hard pressed to find a third film that's generally considered the best, though. I don't know what the general consensus is, but I have a feeling Toy Story 3 might be the closest bet (though I still prefer 1 and 2).
DeleteI know we mentioned that Jerome Opena and Dean White make colored pencils look good. Honestly, I didn't even realize that any of the Glory stuff went straight from pencil to color. If it ends up just looking like inks anyway, I'm obviously fine with that because I can't even anyway. I guess the distinction I'd make is that few people can make pencils that LOOK like pencils with color work. There's an issue of JSA that Alex Ross drew and toned with pencil that was then colored which looked good too, come to think of it.
