Man, I saw Taken on Valentine's Day but now that I'm listening to this episode I realize that I saw the PG-13 version.
ReplyDeleteI need to track down the R version.
Hey Jesse, I just got to the part where you respond to my critiques of Expelled. I just want to point out two things... first, I know you said you're a creationist, but I wanted to make sure you know that creationists and Christians are two different things; creationists are the ones who believe the Bible is the literal truth and that the Earth is 6,000 years old, and God created all the life on Earth exactly as they are today. During Rian's segment on jellyfish a week or two ago, you mentioned it evolving other abilities (and specifically using the word "evolve") so that's why I assumed you believed in evolution, or at least a divinely-guided version of it.
ReplyDeleteSecond of all, I just wanna say I'm not anti-religion and I'm all for religion and science co-existing, but what we're talking about is teaching religious ideas in a science class. Creationism is not only NOT science, but is easily disproved by scientific evidence. We know for a fact that evolution is real and is happening right now, and has been happening for billions of years. That's why it's taught in science classes. Trying to teach that evolution is wrong, or that creationism is true, is literally like trying to teach that 2 + 2 is 5 in a math class.
It's also unconstitutional to teach religion in a public school. Our forefathers made sure that church and state would be separate, and as long as the schools are run by the state they can't have religious ideas being taught to the students.
So that's all I wanted to say... I hope you don't feel like I'm attacking you or anything, because I'm not trying to, but I feel like I need to respond to what was said on the podcast.
scott,
ReplyDeleteits all good in the hood.
Oh, one more thing (wish these had edit buttons). You mentioned that you didn't know if I had seen the movie, and in fact I haven't seen it yet, but I have read the website expelledexposed.com and I have read blogs written about the movie by PZ Meyer, Eugenie Scott, Michael Shermer, and Richard Dawkins among others, and I have listened to a lot of discussion about the movie on a podcast I listen to called The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe.
ReplyDeleteBut I hate being one of those people that rails against a movie and when someone asks them if they've seen it they say "well, no..." I wanted to see it when it came out but I didn't want to give money to Ben Stein's cause so I waited until I could see it for free (I did try to get free tickets to a screening, though). But now I've downloaded the movie and I'm waiting to watch it until I can see it with Cristina, since she wants to see it for the 'lulz.'
Rian. Trent Reznor announces no more Nine Inch Nails. I don't know if that means he's going to make non-NIN music or just quitting music altogether, but here it is:

Also, what did you think of the edited version of Taken? I'm sure it's not as good as the R version, but did you like it at all?
Rian: that page works for me, I just tried it. Here it is copied and pasted:
ReplyDeleteTowards the beginning of my career in Nine Inch Nails, our biggest break came in the form of an invitation to perform a series of shows with Jane's Addiction. These performances essentially created and defined the term "alternative" rock in the US, created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for Nirvana to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really fucking FUN to play and attend - truly the best times I've had. The shows were epic. So epic, they propelled NIN to the "next level" (whatever that means), but caused Jane's to implode. The band broke up at the end of that tour.
Fast forward to the present. Corporate rock STILL sucks. A friend tells me they saw the original Jane's lineup play a tiny show in LA that was unbelievable. I break out my Jane's records and am amazed by how vital they sound. These guys were the real deal and in this current climate mostly dominated by poseurs and pussies it was refreshing to hear something that sounded dangerous, volatile, beautiful and SINCERE.
Emails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we're in the studio experimenting. We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit, we record LOTS of guitar solos, we discuss, we actually begin to all communicate, we yell some more, we become FRIENDS, we laugh again and we do some great things. I get to see first hand why they broke up all those years ago but I also get the chance to see four distinct personalities that become an INCREDIBLE band when they're in the same room.
In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while. Last year's "Lights in the Sky" tour was something I'm quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production. It was also quite difficult to pull off technically and physically night after night and left us all a bit dazed. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year. The approach to these shows is quite different from last year - much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted. Fun for us and a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye. I reached out to Jane's to see if they'd want to join us across the US and we all felt it could be a great thing. Will it work? Will it resonate in the marketplace? Who knows. Is there big record label marketing dollars to convince you to attend? Nope.
Does it feel right to us and does it seem like it will be fun for us and you? Yes it does.
Look for tour dates soon and I hope to see you out there.
Trent

And yeah, I loved Taken. I thought it was pretty brutal but now I realize I saw the sanitized version.
