i gotta see 13 Assassins! Rian, looks like you're right about the one character being mysteriously alive, check out the end of the plot paragraph: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/13_Assassins
ReplyDeleteRian, what did you think of the MST3k Gamera stuff? i haven't seen any of it, i really want to, but i'm a huge Gamera fan and i love the regular versions of the movies. did they do Gamera vs. Jiger? that's my favorite one.
haha, wow, you guys got into it at the end of this one!!! O_O was that a joke, though??? i can't tell!!!! omg
Yeah, I spoke to someone in the comic store about 13 Assassins the other day who confirmed that that one dude is apparently immortal. As for what the Wikipedia article says, they make no direct mention of him being a demon in the film. I'm guessing it's some kind of cultural reference that would make more sense if I were from Japan. As someone who knew nothing about the events or characters beforehand, it's an odd addition to the film. There's nothing else even remotely supernatural in the movie, and overall it's a very subdued film for Takashi Miike.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the MST3K vs Gamera episodes as much as I have any other episode of MST3K. I'm so in love with the show that I can't really say that I've seen an episode I didn't like. I will say that I was a little tired of Gamera after watching 5 straight episodes of him. By the 4th episode I began to want a bit more variety. Each individual episode was perfectly fine, though. As you know, I love monster movies, but Kaiju has never been my thing. I just cannot get into Godzilla and the like. Every time I've tried to sit down and watch a Japanese giant monster movie I become bored almost immediately. However, I will say that I'm interested in checking out the more recent Gamera movies from the late 90's/early 00's because there's a special feature on one of the MST3K DVDs where a guy talks about them, and they sound awesome. I still have that nagging feeling that I'll be very underwhelmed and bored if and when I watch one of them, though. I dunno. It's just not my thing.
The Gamera movies they riffed on the show are Gamera, Gamera vs Barugon, Gamera vs Gaos, Gamera vs Guiron, and Gamera vs Zigra. I wanna say those are the first 5 Gamera movies, but you'd probably know better than me. Of the lot, I got the most laughs out of Gamera vs Gaos. I find it hard to believe that these movies are geared towards kids considering that in that film they lure Gaos out of hiding with a huge fountain of (fake) human blood!
As for the podcast, all I can say right now is that there will be an episode 175, and it will be online next Sunday as usual.
i guess i'm pickier or not as much of a fan but i've seen episodes of MST3k that i thought were pretty dull. not that they're bad or not fun to watch, but just the jokes weren't funny or i couldn't remember any of the jokes after the episode was over. for me at least, the episodes definitely get better with repeated watches, so maybe if i re-watched some of the ones i thought were subpar i'd come to appreciate them.
ReplyDeleteanyway, yes, i love kaiju stuff!!! most Godzilla movies are very boring, you're right, sometimes it takes FOREVER for Godzilla to show up or for anything to happen. have you seen the original 1954 Gojira, at least? that's definitely the best one. my other favorite is Godzilla vs. Hedorah, so funny and weird. i really prefer the 70s Godzilla stuff, the later movies are even more boring and stiff, but there's something about seeing the guys tromping around in monster suits wrecking miniature cities that never gets old.
but for me Gamera is where my heart is, i think his movies are way better than Godzilla in every way, partly because Gamera's fights are way bloodier and weirder, and the human characters are always way more engaging than the boring cardboard people in most Godzilla flicks. Gamera kind of started out being more "adult," and Gamera vs. Gyaos was on the cusp of that which is partly why it's so grim and there's so much shit about land ownership and stuffy military types. but the other kiddie Gamera movies are pretty bloody too, like in Gamera vs. Guiron where Space Gyaos chops up Regular Gyaos into pieces and Gamera getting stabbed and shit. kids in Japan can handle more, i guess, heh.
anyway, the 90s Gamera stuff is really good, you should check it out. give it a chance though, the first one in the trilogy, Guardian of the Universe, isn't that good in my opinion, but it kicks it into gear with the second one, Attack of Legion. some of the 90s stuff is a little too serious and po-faced for me but i still love it. my favorite one is the 2006 flick, Gamera The Brave (or Gamera: Little Braves in Japan), which you might not like because it's totally a sappy tearjerker kiddie flick, but it also has some of the bloodiest monster action in it.
but yeah, that stuff's not for everyone, so no worries if you can't get into it, we can still be friends. >:)
WAIT I FORGOT, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i can't wait until next Sunday!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHH
ReplyDeleteI think you an I are on the same page about MST3K. There are episodes I've watched that didn't make me laugh at all, but when I'm watching it I'm pretty much never bored or uninterested. That's one of the great things about MST3K: if the jokes aren't great, you can focus on the movie, but if the movie is unwatchable, there are jokes to focus on. Then there are the host segments th break up the theater stuff if that's not doing it for you that episode. Plus, I love Joel, Mike, and the bots so much that I never get tired of spending time with them. I feel like I'm hanging out with old friends when I watch MST3K.
ReplyDeleteI can't promise that I'll watch any of those newer Gamera movies any time soon, but I definitely want to. If I still managed to watch 7+ movies a week like I did a few years ago, they'd definitely make it into my immediate rotation.
This movie review seemed like the Sidetracked interpretation of 13 Assassins. Kind of boring at the beginning then an epic battle at the end! Did Rian come out of the woods at the end? I could've sworn he died. :D
ReplyDeleteI probably would've freaked more if I didn't put off listening for a couple weeks.
Loved the Baltimore Con stuff.
