Rian, i love your comic store stories, i think i've said that already but it just blows my mind hearing about these zany customers.
ReplyDeletei like the Ghost Rider movie quite a bit, myself, i guess just because of Nicolas Cage and how weird he is in it, that'll sell me on almost anything. i didn't really like Crank and i haven't seen the directors' other movies but i'm still gonna go out and see Ghost Rider 2. i'll see anything with Cage in it, though. i think i'm in the minority on that one.
and i like Colleteral Damage too!!! haha. and that's directed by ANDREW DAVIS, man, show some respect!! ;)
i'm with you on Hannibal, though, ugh. that's one of the few movies i've been THIS CLOSE to walking out on, the only thing that kept me there was that i came with friends and they were my ride. plus walking out when you're hanging out with friends is a weird situation anyway, like if i had been the driver would i just leave without them? or whisper over to them "hey guys, i'm walking out, walk out with me or be stranded!" or maybe i should've just gone outside and taken a walk, probably would've been more enriching than watching the rest of Hannibal. so bad, made even worse by the fact that it followed Silence of the Lambs.
@Ross - It's funny, I used to talk about the comic store a lot more often, but I guess I've gotten used to the weird customers and occurrences to the point that it doesn't occur to me to bring them up much anymore. As you can hear in this episode, I didn't even mention the store until Jesse prompted me to bring it up. I'll have to try to get around to that stuff more often, because I do think it can be pretty entertaining.
ReplyDeleteSo, when you say that you'll see anything with Nic Cage, is that because you actually like him or you just like how weird he is and being able to say how odd/shitty his stuff can be? I like his stuff every now and then these days (Bad Lieutenant, Knowing, Bangkok Dangerous, etc), but still have an overall view of him as being washed up, over-exposed, and pretty terrible at "acting". I don't think he's incapable of making a good movie, but I think that, more often than not these days, a good Nic Cage movie is usually good despite him and not because of him.
On a related topic, I'd be curious to know why you enjoyed Ghost Rider. Was it solely a "so bad it's good" situation? I recall being tired of rolling my eyes by the end of that movie.
I had to look up Andrew Davis to see who he was. Of his films, the only ones I've seen are Under Siege, The Fugitive, Chain Reaction, and Collateral Damage. Of those 4, the only one I really think is worth non-eye-winking praise is The Fugitive. Under Siege is an okay action movie, though I've never cared for Segal. I used to love Chain Reaction, but watched it recently and thought it was pretty weak. As for Collateral Damage, I'd put it FAR down the list of Schwarzenegger's best films. He wasn't particularly awesome, and I thought the ending and the villain were pretty lame.
And yeah, Hannibal is shit. Have you seen Red Dragon or Hannibal Rising? I liked both, though they're obviously not in the same league as Silence Of The Lambs.
As for walking out of a movie in the theater, I've never done it, nor can I imagine a situation in which I would do it. Once my ass hits the seat in a theater I am completely committed to making it through the film. I cannot even remember ever leaving a theater to go to the bathroom. I don't want to miss anything. That's just the way I am. I almost NEVER turn off a movie on DVD or television that I've started watching from the beginning either, unless I've seen it before. I guess it's that anal retentive part of me that forces me to alphabetize and categorize all of my comics and movies and such.
@Rian: i do actually like Cage, yeah, but liking how weird he is is part of it.i think maybe my standards are just different. i can't really say if he's a "good" actor or not, that's so subjective, but regardless i find watching him really compelling, doesn't matter what the movie is. he's one of the only actors who can get me to watch anything. i just love how weird he is even when he's doing a mainstream sort of movie, this underlying hint of strangeness. you should watch some of his more bonkers movies if you haven't, like Vampire's Kiss, Wild At Heart, and the Nicolas Cage holy grail Deadfall. i liked Bad Lieutenant a lot, but i wasn't crazy about Knowing or Bangkok Dangerous even though i enjoyed watching Cage in them. i guess i kind of divorce him from the movie he's in, sort of, like i just don't care if the movie sucks but if it doesn't, so much the better! haha.
ReplyDeletelike Ghost Rider, it's not a great movie, it's not BAD it's just mediocre; which usually for me equals "bad" because i want to watch either good or a complete trainwreck, middle of the road is the worst, and without Cage i wouldn't have given Ghost Rider a second glance because it's safe and banal, but with Cage in it i can totally get into it. it's just a personal preference thing, i'm sure not going to argue that Ghost Rider is great cinema or anything.
his filmography is definitely hit or miss, though. there are some of his movies that even his presence can't save for me, like Drive Angry is pretty bad, i barely made it through that, or Gone In 60 Seconds is really boring, and in Kick-Ass i was hanging on by a thread after Cage's character dies. it just depends. Collateral Damage is a similar thing for Arnold, there's just something about his charisma that gets me into it even though it's absolutely nowhere near his best movies. i was mostly kidding about showing Andrew Davis respect as a filmmaker, i mean i like him and i like how by-the-book his filmmaking style is but he's not one of the greats or anything. i don't really like Under Siege either, i never got into Seagal, he's like an empty vessel with no personality.
i've seen Red Dragon but i don't remember a thing about it. i guess that means it wasn't that great.
i feel the same way as you with walking out of movies, even when i wish i could i always feel like i have to stay. i'm totally with you on the bathroom thing too, going to take a leak during a movie is unthinkable!!! i rarely turn off a video/DVD but i've done it here and there, sometimes a movie is just so bad or offensive or shitty that i just can't get through it and it becomes a matter of what i'd rather be doing with my time/life's too short/i'd rather get work done. i think the last movie i shut off before finishing was either Space Cowboys or Tetsuo The Bullet Man. sometimes i'll watch a movie on 1.5 speed, too, that's like halfway between watching and shutting off. usually i'll only do that if i have to review something for the podcast.
I tried that 1.5x speed thing with a movie one time and found it too distracting. The only movie I can recall turning off in the middle over the last few years was some Steven Seagal movie with vampires.
ReplyDeleteStill listening... just don't have much to say. Enjoyed the show.
ReplyDeleteI liked Red Dragon. No Silence of the Lambs, but good, like Rian said.
