ReplyDeletethis is hilarious, i loved this episode, haha. i felt bad for Mr. Miller, though, Rian, you sure laid into him pretty hard. XD.
ReplyDeletei find Mr. Miller's approach to movies really appealing, very pure and childlike. i'm jealous, haha.
my dad is pretty deaf, he uses hearing aids and stuff, but when watching movies at home he uses the subtitles and closed captioning and that works well for him.
Mr. Miller remembers the Planet of the Apes movies pretty well, actually, except Return to the Planet of the Apes is a TV movie and i don't think it's part of the main movie continuity, not sure. anyway he remembers Escape From The Planet Of The Apes, the third, well, that's the one where the chimps go back in time to the 1970s.
i don't think Rise is connected that much, it doesn't fit with the old continuity of what Mr. Miller was saying where the plague kills all the dogs and cats so humans adopt apes as slaves, and it doesn't fit into the time loop of the old movies. in the original series there was a chimp named Caesar in Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes, who was Zira's child from the previous movie that Mr. Miller mentioned, who grows up in the era where the apes are slaves. Caesar leads an ape revolt but it's much more vengeful than in Rise, he wants to destroy humans and take over rather than the Rise Caesar who just wants to be free. then in the final movie, Battle For The Planet Of The Apes, Caesar tries to make peace between apes and the remaining humans. so it's not really the same, i guess, i don't think there's any point trying to make it all match up. i actually felt like Rise shouldn't have been a Planet Of The Apes movie at all other than brand recognition. i still think Escape is the best Apes movie, maybe i'm in the minority on that.
i did like Rise a lot though, even though the human characters were boring as hell and there were a lot of little things that didn't make sense, like how the hell did the chimp handler guy not know that the Bright Eyes chimp was pregnant? as a chimpanzee expert how do you miss that? and how did the other chimp expert, Caroline, after years of dating James Franco, not notice that Caesar was a super-chimp until Franco had to explain it? just kinda stupid little things but all the ape stuff with Caesar was great, and the ape acting was awesome.
the monkey with the one eye in Rise was named Koba, Jacobs was the black dude's name like Rian said.
Wow, I didn't realize you were such a big PotA fan, Ross. As I mentioned, I've only seen the first one, so I can't really comment on a lot of the stuff about the old franchise. I didn't know time travel worked into the series at all, unless you count the kind of "time travel" that takes place when someone is in suspended animation such as the gap between Alien and Aliens.
ReplyDeleteIf you enjoyed this episode, you should go back and listen to the 3 previous episodes I recorded with my dad. We reviewed Knowing, Star Trek, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I think the Knowing episodes is considered by our few fans to be one of the best episodes of Sidetracked. I know Jesse thinks so. The revelation about my dad's beliefs concerning alien life was pretty attention-grabbing. Jesse and I have each recorded an episode with our mothers in the past, as well.
I'm glad you enjoyed the show. When it came down to it, Jesse and I have been on such a roll with the show this year that I simply didn't want to take a week off. I'm glad the extra work was worth it.
My favorite episodes have Rian's dad in them. I love listening to them argue. And How angry Rian gets. Its gold. I really recommend going back and listening to the older Side Project episodes with Kurt.
ReplyDelete@Rian: i'm not a HUGE PotA fan or anything, i like the movies at just a regular level, i only own the first one (on VHS! ha) and i saw the entire series for the first time just a few years ago so they're still pretty fresh in my mind. the time travel happens in the 3rd one, which sets up a time loop that cycles back to the first movie. i definitely recommend watching them all.
ReplyDelete@both you guys: oh man, i went back and listened to the Knowing episode, so funny. Jesse, you're totally right, Rian and his dad are gold. i love Rian hammering at his dad his dad just shrugging it off, and whenever Rian says something simple like "i don't like how the characters are written in this movie" his dad writes it off as Rian picking the movie apart too much, haha. like the only way to avoid to being accused of obsessively picking a film apart is to say nothing beyond "i liked the movie." haha.
i'd be interested to see what other movies Kurt is into, his taste seems so unpredictable. i'm also curious about what zombie films Kurt was talking about if he hasn't seen Night of the Living Dead, haha. where did his distaste of zombies come from? the only pre-Night zombie movie i can think of is White Zombie from the 1930s, but even then it's not a zombie apocalypse thing at all, its voodoo set-up is totally different.
and i loved Kurt's UFO story, good stuff.
Awesome! I'm glad you went back and listened to/enjoyed the Knowing episode Ross.

THAT is what I can't get him to understand! He has no argument for things, so he criticizes me for shit that I don't normally do.
I'll go ahead and tell you right now that my father hasn't seen ANY zombie movies. He's making a generalization based on tastes that he's acquired by doing no research at all. I think he assumes that zombie movies are dumb because they're gory and aren't known primarily for having deep, emotional stories. You'll notice how he could come up with no examples when I prodded him about the zombie subject.
Some of his favorite movies (off the top of my head) are Hoosiers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, Dances With Wolves, Saving Private Ryan, Kelly's Heroes, Kung-Fu Panda, and any comedy that has a scene of a cat being comedically mistreated (thrown out a window, etc). He loves World War II, western, and sports movies. He also claims that The Thing From Another World is one of his favorite movies of all time, but I know that he only says that since I LOVE the Carpenter version so much and he thought it was gross. He loves to piss me off with little things like that, then gets mad at me when I get on his case about it.
your dad is so weird. i'd be really curious what he thought about Night of the Living Dead in particular, and the rest of the Romero stuff too.
ReplyDeletei haven't even heard of half of the movies you listed! Hoosiers, Kelly's Heroes, Liberty Valence?? never heard of 'em! heh. so weird that he likes Kung Fu Panda so much. i thought it was kinda boring.
the Howard Hawks Thing blows, i'll just come out and say that, haha. not even comparing it to the Carpenter film, just by itself it's dopey and dull and all the characters do is sit around and crack jokes while the monster is off being menacing somewhere else.
I'd love to get my dad to watch Night Of The Living Dead, but I already know he'd hate it. Not for any good reason, either.
ReplyDeleteHoosiers is a basketball movie with Gene Hackman. Kelly's Heroes is a WWII movie with Donald Sutherland, among others. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence is a John Ford western with John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Lee Marvin. More about that last one on the next episode...
Yeah, I'm not a huge Kung-Fu Panda fan either. It's not bad, I just don't think it's great like a lot of people do. I FAR preferred Wall-E that year.
I don't dislike the The Thing From Another World. It doesn't come close to comparing to the Carpenter version, but I enjoy old monster movies enough to appreciate it. I remember being a kid and watching The Thing and telling my dad how much I loved it. He told me that the original was better, so we rented it and watched it together, and pretty much the only thing I took away from it was "killer carrot from outer space".
