Rian: sweet mother of god you liked Jersey Girl. that's up there with Hannibal for me, i found it mind-boggling. o_o that was way back when it came out in the theater, so maybe i'd appreciate it now.
ReplyDeleteanyway, i wasn't TOTALLY snowed by you guys pretend-fighting on your last episode, but it was definitely convincing. i think i was snowed up until the very end where Rian was like "i'm done with this podcast!" or something. it makes sense when you guys bring up all the reasonable points about the entire preceding episode being good-natured and agreeable, but i thought you guys pulled off the fight well enough that i forgot about the other stuff. it really worked. i was sitting here all "OMG!!!" while listening, hehheh.
man, i'm so disappointed to hear about The Ward. i haven't seen it but my favorite review guy Devin Faraci hated it, too. :( i guess i'll still see it via Netflix at some point. d'ohhh
i'm kinda between you guys with superhero stuff. Rian's standpoint is the most reasonable, since good material is good material regardless, but i'm feeling Jesse on this one, i am burned out on the Big Two stuff. not that there isn't good work being done on those books, but i'm burned out on the shared universe stuff and characters coming back from the dead or magic gods existing alongside sciencey heroes, the same characters over and over being shuffled around and none of them really change, and obviously i haven't read every single Big Two comic so maybe i'm missing something but for the last several years it's felt like they're moving the same handful of pieces around into different configurations but it's just not enough.
i don't think that's a symptom of superheroes as a genre, though, that's just the way these big corporate comics are done, that's the issue. and all that said, i'd still sure as hell work on some Marvel book if they ever come calling, haha. Ross Campbell's X-23/Sleepwalker/X-Force, sign me up.
I don't know where the hate for Jersey Girl seems to come from. It's no masterpiece and the little girl is a bit annoying, but I think it's got a good story. At the very least, it's better than both of Smith's most recent films combined (imho).
ReplyDeleteI've never heard/read the term "snowed" before, and even after looking it up on the Urban Dictionary, I'm still not sure if any of their definitions fits the way you're using it. I assume you mean "fooled"?
During recording, the fight felt really fake. Listening back, I agree that it's pretty convincing until I try to end it and am obviously not in the moment. It seems that you were the only one we successfully tricked at all, but 1 out of 6 ain't bad, I guess.
Yeah, The Ward was a major letdown. It's not even bad in an interesting way. It's just completely unoriginal in every way. I guess that's at least one thing that reviewer and I agree on. :P
As far as the superhero topic is concerned, there's way too much discussion to put it all down here in writing, but the bottom line to my opinion is this: Just because a comic has "Marvel" or "DC" written on the cover doesn't mean that you have to read every (or ANY) other comic by that company. You don't even need to take them into account. If you like a character, read their book. If you like a writer, read their book. If you like an artist, read their book. If you've heard good things, give a book a try. If you've got a few extra dollars in your pocket, give something a try just because it looks neat. Nobody says you have to keep reading something if you don't like it. Nobody says you have to like every issue of a character's book. Nobody says, "if you don't like one of our books, you can't read any of them" and nobody says, "if you like this book, you have to read all of these others." Crossovers are no exception. An entertaining 22 page story is an entertaining 22 page story whether it's a one-shot or part 6 of a 9-part story. The cliffhanger with a "Continued In..." caption is a suggestion based on your opinion of what you just read, not a binding contract. Read what you want and don't read what you don't want, but don't discount one book or an entire line, company, or genre all because of a few books. There are as many shitty independent, non-superhero books as there are superhero books. By all means, read what you like, or what you can afford, or what appeals to you, or what you're in the mood for. What I have a problem with is the (seeming) blatant disregard of an entire genre because of, in the grand scheme of things, a few books.
You're back! I'd say at the end of "The End?" I thought, "yeah right," but when Joel and "Kansas" came on the next one I thought "ok, that might've been real." Funny either way.
ReplyDeleteYou guys have Stock*Pile go to Boston Con and I'll attend. I haven't been to a Con since I was a kid, but I'll drive to Boston to grab issue #2s of Stock*Pile books!
I was totally surprised by Limitless. Thought it was awesome.
Interesting review of Red State. Haven't seen it yet, but have listened to SMOD & SIR for a while now. You've both made me more curious about it than K. Smith has.
Great show!
@Rian: maybe i'm using snowed incorrectly, you're right that none of the urbandictionary fit the way i used it, but in my circle of friends it's always meant "fooled" like you said. i guess i better stop saying it.
ReplyDeletei agree with you on the superhero topic, it's dumb to draw lines in the sand about anything or feel obligated. i can't speak for Jesse or anyone feeling any kind of burnout or comics fatigue, but for me i just haven't been interested in anything i'm seeing, it's that simple, it's not a declaration. i still go to the comic shop and try to keep up with the Big Two comics news and stuff, but none of it's really piquing my interest right now except Batwoman and Becky Cloonan's Teen Doom thing. if something comes along that really gets me interested i'll definitely check it out, i'm not making some unbreakable, cut-and-dry No Big Two/I Will Only Buy Indie mandate or something. i'm actually not that interested in any of the Big Two characters since all my favorites are either dead or have been written out or transformed into something stupid, so most of my Big Two reading is driven by who's working on the books like you said. usually it's about friends working on the books, which is the main reason i want to check out Batwoman because Amy Reeder is a friend and then Becky on Teen Doom, and i would totally get Rian Miller's Spider-Man.
it's silly to take a hardline stance on something like this, but i feel that Jesse, in maybe melodramatic terms, is trying to express more of a genre fatigue than a binding contract standpoint and i think there's something to be said for that. even though ultimately good is good regardless, i've definitely felt burned out on particular genres or subgenres because of recurring tropes or styles of storytelling, like i was super into Chinese romantic period dramas in college, but after a while you can get tired of the same types of storytelling techniques and character archtypes and i got to the point where i didn't care if i never saw another movie like that again. and maybe all a person needs is a break, maybe in 5 years i'll be frothing for this stuff again or a creative team will come along with ideas that'll get me fired up.
@Nico
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoyed the ride over the past 2 episodes, regardless of how convincing our ruse was. As we explained on the show, we never fully committed to the idea we had for the big surprise, but I thought it was awesome to hear a Joel/Kansas episode regardless of how/why it came about. Hopefully some other people agree. I mean, where else are you going to get THAT in-depth of a review about Big Money Rustlas?
Joel and I are definitely doing Boston Con. We'll have something new at the show, but I can't make any guarantees as to what it'll be yet. Obviously, we both want to move on to Man-Gull #2 and Forever Winter #2, but one or two other things may pop up in the meantime. Whatever we come up with, you'll be able to hear about it here first.
Limitless was a complete surprise to me, too. It did just enough things differently from a lot of generic sci-fi/thrillers to win me over. I loved that scene with the Russian mobsters in Bradley Cooper's apartment toward the end.
That's awesome that even though I railed so hard against Red State and Jesse agreed that the ending is terrible, you're more interested in seeing it because of our review than all of the pimping Kevin Smith has been doing lately. I definitely think you should see it, but I definitely don't think you should get your hopes up.
@Ross
That little rant I went on in my last post was pretty much all of my feelings on the superhero topic, and kind of comics and all media in general. Obviously there are things I don't like that other people enjoy and probably hate to hear me badmouth, and opinions on this type of stuff are completely subjective, but I hate to see people blindly disregard something I'm so passionate about. The thing is, I don't even think Jesse meant that he was going to never read Spiderman or any other Marvel or DC book again, but it was one of those instances where a lot of events probably culminated in a strong, temporary feeling that he felt the need to voice. Even as Jesse gave his opinions on "all" superhero books, I didn't believe that he was going to disregard them forever. I just wanted to provide the opposite, more logical opinion to his rant. And just because I use the term "logical," I'm not saying that I'm right or Jesse's opinions don't matter. I'm simply saying that my approach was the safe median between "all superheroes are amazing all the time" and "all superheroes can eat a dick". In this argument, Jesse was on one side and I was Switzerland.
Once Ross Campbell's Marrow Versus The Marvel Universe is a hit, be sure to namedrop me to the Spiderman editors. I've got a great idea for a new seagull-based villain that'll give Peter Parker's sales a real kick in the pants.
Ha Ha. So that was all a joke. I listened to that episode but stopped at the movie review so I was surprised by the next episode when it was Joel and Kansas. Good to have you back, but bring Joel and Kansas back on sometime soon.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they'll be back before long. I'm glad you enjoyed our ruse.
