thanks for the Glory shout-out! i'm really glad you guys dug it, thanks. and thanks for being a superfan, Rian, it really means a lot. :)
ReplyDeletei haven't read any Glory comics either, so i'm at the same level as you guys, and i was also kind of confused by the Gloria West stuff. at first i thought i got it, but after i started reading reviews and other people's interpretations, i started realizing i didn't really get it. the Gloria thing was from Alan Moore's Glory, and on wikipedia it seems like Gloria West is just Glory's civilian identity like Clark Kent, but then in Joe's story i thought Gloria and Glory were somehow psychically linked and Gloria was experiencing Glory's adventures just in her mind or something. but reading the issue again here it does seem like Gloria would "hulk out" and physically become Glory for a little while before reverting to human form... but then at the end of the issue it's clear they're 2 different physical beings, so i'm not sure what it means when Glory "leaves." like how did she leave Gloria's body? was she living inside Gloria somehow and when she left she materialized out of thin air? or was Glory's inanimate physical body stored elsewhere in some secret location and when she left Gloria she "woke up" in that other location and then they were no longer mentally linked? i should really ask Joe, heh.
Rob looks over everything we do but he's never really weighed in. at first (can't believe it was a year ago already) there was some resistance from the Image folks about how outrageous i wanted to make Glory, i think i wrote about that somewhere online or talked about it in my 3 Chicks Podcast interview (YOU LISTENED TO THAT, RIGHT?), but as time went by last year and i started working on the book, i think once they saw what i was doing and how it was turning out i got more freedom or they were cool with it. if you think Glory is muscular in this first issue, just wait. >:D so yeah, there hasn't been any restrictions since then, i just draw things how i want and everybody seems cool and Rob's been super enthusiastic about all of it. i think the biggest restriction in the first issue was that i had wanted to make Glory taller than Supreme but it was a no-go. if i ever draw them side by side again, though, i'm totally just going to make Glory taller than him like she should be and say DEAL WITH IT! >:D
it's definitely different for me not being the writer, my first big book Spooked was written by Antony Johnston but that was back in 2003 so it's been a while (Rian, have you read that one??). Joe is really cool about collaboration and he listens to my ideas and lets me get my fingers in the story, like the tank punch thing was something i requested, and it was my idea to up the violence like Glory cracking that Nazi on her knee, and there are a couple new characters coming up that i invented and Joe wrote into the story. and the third issue taking place on Mars was also my idea, so it's not a cut and dry situation where i get the scripts and i draw them and that's it, Joe is definitely the head writer boss guy, he comes up with almost all of it and executes everything, but there's a lot of back and forth too.
anyway, whew, wrote a lot there. hope you guys like the second issue, too!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who was confused. I was worried that I came off like I didn't like the book or something because I was picking apart the story. I honestly just think that since I've read pretty much everything you've drawn, which is almost all written by you, I definitely noticed a different vibe in the dialogue and stuff. Like if Jeff Smith suddenly drew a comic scripted by someone else after only doing Bone, Shazam, and RASL, which have all been drawn AND written by him. It would definitely take some getting used to. Thanks for clearing all that stuff up about Rob and Joe's involvement, Ross!
DeleteOh, and I've totally read Spooked! I think I even mentioned it during the Glory conversation on this episode as the only other major work of yours I'd read which was written by someone other than you. I'm gonna assemble all of my Ross Campbell books on my bed and take a picture of them one of these days to prove my super-fandom.
Not really...that'd be super nerdy and weird. But I COULD...and it would be impressive.
...but I won't. ;)
The beginning of the show I think I heard Ella in the background and had to pause to see if it was my 10 month old in the background!
ReplyDeleteGood show... Comic Book Men is fading to me. Love TESD podcast, but like you guys said the show (at times) seems forced. They should be getting comic writers/artists to come on and talk shop for 7-10 mins. Seems like Kevin Smith could pull some people (Phil Hester, Jim Mahfood and those are just 2 artists that have worked with him), may get more readers that way.
Can't wait for 200!
There's a lot wrong with Comic Book Men. Namely that it's taking something which only appeals to a few people and trying to make it appealing to a lot of people, which results in what's good about it being very watered-down. I'll be very curious to see if they bring the show back for another season. While I don't personally love it, I enjoy catching it after The Walking Dead every week now that I'm watching that show as it airs.
