  1. you guys really ARE theater snobs, haha! although you're almost reverse-theater-elitists because all the theaters you're into are the mainstream corporate bullshit theaters like Regal. XD

the theater Jesse makes fun of the whole time sounds like the theater i go to here in Rochester! they only take cash, cheaper tickets, they're not a chain, locally-owned, except they're usually pretty hopping if you go at night. but i went to see X-Men around 1:00 in the afternoon and there were like 3 other people there, that's the best way to see movies for me. they also have the best theater seats and best sound in the city, and they usually have either still images or the trivia shit before the movie, which is great for me because i hate the "first look" stuff and commercials that Regal plays. i don't want to go to a movie and be forced to watch television!

  2. i'm sorta commenting as i'm listening here, heh. Rian, you never read Morrison's New X-Men?? Angel is from that, she's the best!!! she is totally a "decent" mutant, she's one of my favorite X-characters, second to Marrow! :( they definitely crapped on her in the movie, though, totally underwrote her and they had to "sex her up" since she's not a light-skinned supermodel stripper in the comic. >:(

i liked Azazel quite a bit, though, definitely wish they gave him some personality other than awesome shoes.

i'm not gonna get too much into what i thought about the movie other than i enjoyed it but had a lot of problems with it and like less and less the more i think about it. i have such a rocky relationship with X-Men, i don't know. not sure you checked out our podcast on Audioshocker where i blathered endlessly in the comment thread, heh.

    anyways, great episode!

  3. Thanks for the props, Ross.

I have read New X-Men and am a pretty big fan. Did I say on the show that I don't know who Angel is? Maybe I wasn't thinking about New X-Men's Angel because they're such different versions of her.

  4. i wasn't sure but you sounded like you weren't familiar with Angel, even though i figured you must have read New X-Men! but yeah, definitely a huge departure from the original version of the character. i don't think we'll ever get anything like Morrison's "freak" mutants. :( everybody's too hung up on the main (boring) players.

  5. Ross- I admit I am a theater snob BUT I hate seeing movies with a lot of people so seeing movies at 1 in the afternoon is always nice. I don't mind the small theater and I do hate the Regal commercials but I am a snob in that if I'm paying to go see a movie in the theater I want a nice large screen with good projection, really good sound, and comfy seats. That's all I ask lol.
And living in a biggish city I'm really not used to the small town vibe. I actually enjoyed my time seeing X-Men in that theater. It was just weird because I felt like I hopped in the delorean and went back in time.

I also listened to your podcast and read the comments and totally get what you are saying about X-Men: FC. I just had fun with it. It was faaaaaar from a perfect movie but it did its job for me in making X-Men cool again. And while I would have liked for them to focus on some of the minor characters the focus was Xavier and Magneto and they were f'in awesome.

I loved Morrison's X-Men run. I remember when there were rumors that Beak was going to be in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and I knew that there was no way that would be true. No way they make an X-Men look that "ugly". The Xorn students and Xorn himself (pre-Magneto reveal) were my favorite parts of the Morrison run.

    Thanks again for listening!

  6. they did kind of have Beak in Wolverine Origins, or at least a character named Barnell Bohusk (Beak's real name), but he was the dude from Lord of the Rings and he had electricity powers instead, haha. whatever.

i still enjoyed X-Men First Class despite all my problems with it, it was definitely fun, i'm not saying it's a bad movie or anything. although X3/The Last Stand is my favorite of the old movies so i'm not sure i'm any authority on X-Men, though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. XD

thanks for checking out the podcast on Audioshocker!!!

  7. I feel like I'm the only person in the world who doesn't mind commercials before a movie. Whether it's commercials, trivia, local ads, Regal First Look, or a black screen with music playing, I don't really have a preference. The theater doesn't stick hooks in your eyes and force you to watch the commercials, etc Clockwork Orange style. If I'm with a friend, I'll talk to him/her, and if I'm alone I'll play Angry Birds or something. I don't get why people are so upset and like, "I paid for my ticket, they shouldn't be trying to sell me anything!" What is really the harm in playing a car commercial or an ad for a TV show or something before a movie?

On another note, I don't think that wanting a good picture, good sound, and nice seats in a theater makes someone a snob. That stuff should all be expected. I think that theaters with crummy seats, old screens, and sub-par sound are below the minimum level of quality that a theater should strive for, which is why I'll purposefully steer clear of those places.

As for crowds, I don't think that the number of people in a theater is ever a problem. It's the type of people that can create a poor/uncomfortable experience. When I saw Bug in the theater, it was just myself, my friend, and two other people, but those two other people talked through the entire damned movie. On the other hand, I've been in absolutely packed theaters and never been taken out of the experience by another person once because there were not massive dickheads in the audience. I even like seeing movies in a crowded theater sometimes. For example, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed Paranormal Activity nearly as much as I did if there weren't people freaking out all around me during the movie.

What really pisses me off in a theater is people with excessive food. In my opinion, nachos and cheese should NOT be served in a theater because of the excessive crunching of the chips and the smell of the cheese. Likewise, I've been to theaters that sell hot dogs and all kinds of other food, and the last thing I want while trying to enjoy a movie is to constantly be getting whiffs of someone's chili dog or pizza.

    End rant.

  8. FINALLY saw X-Men:FC and finished listening to this show. (1st movie after having baby)

I agree with almost everything you guys said. Really liked the movie (and was hesitant about it before seeing). Loved the blue and yellow suits, but I thought Magneto's reveal at the end, his shirt/jacket was awful! Looked so f*ing goofy. Helmet was cool though.

Good show. I think I'm only going to listen to half of next show, too, because of Super 8 spoilers...

  9. Yeah, we're bad about spoilers, but it's no fun to only be able to talk about like half of a movie. I'm glad you had the interest/resolve to come back and finish the episode after seeing X-Men.
